Windeed AB has been awarded funding from the Swedish Energy Agency for the project “The Knee Joint that Opens the Deep Seas – Verification of Windeed’s Floating Wind Power at >200 m Depth.” The project aims to increase the technical maturity of Windeed’s patented and cost-efficient mooring and platform system for floating wind turbines operating at depths greater than 200 meters, areas that are currently difficult and costly to exploit. The solution is based on a unique and patented mooring system that enables reduced material use and simpler, lower-cost installation compared to existing technologies. Through simulations, basin model testing, and techno-economic analysis, the project will test and validate the technology at scale together with a requirement-setting customer, to ensure market relevance and industrial applicability. The project will run throughout 2026, with the Swedish Energy Agency contributing SEK 2.9 million. By its completion, both technical and commercial foundations will be established for the development of a full-scale demonstrator in real sea conditions. In the long term, this will help enable large-scale offshore wind power in deep-water areas, an essential step toward a sustainable, fossil-free energy system. The Swedish Energy Agency justifies its decision by noting that the project has strong potential to contribute to a sustainable energy system through the development of a mooring concept that enables simpler, lower-cost installation of floating wind turbines in deeper waters. The solution demonstrates solid commercial potential, and the project is assessed to have a credible execution plan with relevant partners. At the 5th Annual Floating Wind Europe conference in Amsterdam, Windeed’s CEO Bertil Moritz delivered a keynote on the Second Wave of Floating Wind Power — a new approach designed to make floating wind truly scalable, cost-effective, and ready for mass deployment. Moritz emphasized the massive global need for floating wind required for full decarbonization. While first-generation solutions, adapted from offshore oil & gas, provided a starting point, they are too costly and complex to scale. The next generation must be built for industrial production from the ground up. The Key to Cost-Effective Floating Wind Windeed’s second-wave techn ology is designed for mass production, reducing costs and accelerating deployment. Key innovations include: • Lightweight, modular floaters using less material while maintaining performance. • Pre-installed mooring “parking lots” for fast plug-and-play deployment. • No reliance on shipyards, chains, or extreme cranes , ensuring scalability. • Enabling production of two units per week. September 12, 2024 – Västerås, Sweden Windeed is excited to announce the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with ASCO, a leading global provider of logistics and materials management. This partnership aims to strengthen both companies’ positions in the floating wind sector by optimising logistics and operations for floating offshore wind projects. Key Goals of the Partnership The collaboration will focus on creating a comprehensive logistics plan to facilitate the construction and deployment of 1 GW of floating wind power in a single season using Windeed’s innovative floater technology. Additionally, an advanced operations and maintenance (O&M) services plan will be developed. A core component of this strategy is the use of Windeed’s unique in-situ heavy lifting solutions, allowing for significant turbine repairs directly at sea. This capability minimizes downtime and reduces the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), making Windeed’s floating wind solutions both cost-effective and efficient. Ny Teknik, one of Sweden’s premier technology publications, recently featured Windeed and our innovative floating wind technology. The article highlights our founder and CEO, Bertil Moritz, who described our floating wind turbine concept as “the Billy bookshelf of wind power” due to its modular design. This unique structure is designed for industrial-scale production, setting us apart from traditional, material-intensive offshore designs. The article details our recent wave tank tests at Aalborg University in Denmark, which confirmed the stability and resilience of our lightweight floating foundation. Designed with a central tower anchored by three buoyant steel cylinders, our system uses advanced materials to ensure minimal wear and maximum durability, even in rough sea conditions. Our approach achieves comparable LCOE to land-based wind power. This recognition by Ny Teknik underscores our uniqueness and the market's interest in Windeed's solution.
